How to select text across paragraph blocks?

Our users would like to select text that spans across multiple paragraphs.

If the user starts selecting text in paragraph 1, he/she can select the text with precision, but when he keeps selecting more text and comes into paragraph 2, the whole "paragraph 2" is selected.

Here is a mockup on the select behavior we're looking for (that currently isn't possible as far as we know)

Anyone accomplished something like this?

Once the text is selected across paragraphs, and user would for example hit DEL, then it should remove the selected text from both paragraphs (or maybe even merge the paragraphs?)
