Consistently check for optionally instantiated sub-parts of the lib #4

Sometimes for the lib's exposed methods, we check if the underlying resource is present:

  function get_system_cx_key() {
    if (system_channel) {

and sometimes we don't. We should probably do this consistently, and decide on what happens if the resource isn't there.
