zVD closes multiple times a day with Cannot Verify License errors with unstable internet #314
Comments
Same issue, this happened to me months ago too and developer had stated their server had gone down when I contact via email. I feel like there has to be a better authentication method that isn't this reliant on a self hosted solution (that's what it sounded like it was) If you check the website right now it's down, just like it did last time for me, suggesting the whole thing (auth included) is down right now |
I'm looking into this |
To avoid the periodic license validation you should be using offline activation. Nonetheless, there is an issue with the server that I am investigating. |
Can you check if the site is still down for you? |
I'm probably going to remove the licensing and make zVD free going forward. |
zVirtualDesktop is now free. You can download the free version here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!As6Ykrdw1TCG7OAX05AHPe7cCbdqiw?e=Qjw5tH I am working on version 2 which will be free and also open source. |
Thank you for your generosity! I'm excited to hear about the open source version. |
I am having difficulty now on Windows 11 22H2. zVirtualDesktop (registered version) has been running flawlessly for a couple years. I also experienced the issues above with the app unable to access the license server. That has stopped, and it looks like it tried to update itself, but now neither the registered version or the free version will execute on my machine. Both prompt the Windows Tore dialog asking if I really want to install this app and then popup an error dialog, with this message: "Need to include the app manifest in your project so as to target Windows 10. And run without debugging." I don't recall this being an installer, but Windows seems to think it is now. Do you have any ideas? Again I am on Windows 11 22H2. Nathan Fish |
From my link in the previous post, download the one named zVirtualDesktop_Win11_22H2.exe You may need to delete %appdata%\zVirtualDesktop\zVirtualDesktop_Settings.bin Please note that this will remove all of your configuration and reset zVD to default. |
I left some code that was still starting the activation thread so I had to rebuild and push new exes. If you downloaded from my link already then you should do it again. |
There should be no need to delete your zVirtualDesktop_Settings.bin, but if you run into any issues then you can try that. Maybe back up the file first. |
mike - i'm also having trouble getting the free version to start - i'm on insider build (22631) -- so i guess 23H2. But the insider one won't open (nor will any of the others, obviously) -- it just says "download the version for your windows build" and then after i hit okay, it says "need to include the app manifest in your project so as to target windows 10." i've gotten rid of all my old appdata files (settings file, etc.) and cleared all references to zvd in the registry -- still won't open. like the other user, i've had no issues running the og paid version on this build of windows for several years (1.0.98.15) -- and i am back up and running wiht the licensed version after restoring it from files i backed up. |
I just re-downloaded the new file from your link. It is not triggering the Windows Store warning any more, but it still pops up the dialog stating, "Need to include the app manifest in your project so as to target Windows 10. And run without debugging." I did try deleting the settings file in %appdata%, but it did not resolve the issue. |
run winver and tell me your build WIN+R then type winver |

That appears to be a Windows Insider build. There is no guarantee of support there. Does it work with the registered version? I will look into that build. |
yea i hear you re insider, but yes -- it works fine with the registered version, that's the only reason i asked.

Ok keep using the registered version for now. I will look into the build. Did you use the exe named zVirtualDesktop_Insider.exe? |
Thank you! Installing the current WIndows Updates resolved my issue. I am not sure why Windows had not updated yet. The auto updates looked to have scheduled the latest update for an indeterminant time in the future. |
roger that. no problem, of course. and yes -- i tried the file with the _insider.exe suffix. Same two errors i described above -- first, the one telling me to use the correct version for my build and, after that, the one about including the manifest. i'm good with the registered version for now though - so take your time. |
Ditto for me -- windows updated and I can successfully run the appropriate exe 👍 |
My LAN and/or ISP connection is flaking out. This is an existing issue and kicks us off VOIP calls all the time. Very annoying.
But now there's a new annoyance -- I have to restart zVirtualDesktop up to 3 or 4 times per day! It doesn't crash (i.e. it's not related to this ticket). It stops intentionally with a message that the license could not be verified due to failed internet connection. Occam's Razor says this is based on the existing issue that we see with the VOIP disconnects.
This seems like a bug to me though. I don't think a single outage should invalidate a license, it doesn't allow for the possibility of temporary glitches. Can this behavior be changed to something like 'no internet connection for 24 hours'?
