A (search based) mail client that is gaining popularity in the Emacs world is mu4e. You may want to mention it (and try it if you haven't!).

I will checkout mu4e.

The only concern is it does not support Windows. I'd like to make my guide very generic so I need figure out how to use mu4e in Cygwin at first.

I think it should be no problem to compile it from source on Cygwin.
