Welcome to the Sustain OSS DEI Working Group wiki!

Purpose

  • Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and how it affects open source
  • Identify best practices for implementing DEI principles for projects and contributors.
  • Collaborate with communities like to Spotlight on possible metrics that can be implemented to improve community health and communication.
  • Create more awareness of the impact DEI principles can make if more open-source projects and leaders consider it.

Goals & Objectives

  1. Initiate DEI Events and education programs.
  • Organizing DEI tracks at FOSS conferences and creating a report of it at the end of the year.
    • Possible progress/impact indicators
      • Follow-ups/inquiries for support or participation in the work
      • Anecdotal accounts of adopted practices or increased equity/inclusion
  • Podcast sessions with leading DEI advocates around the world
    • Look at what podcasts have covered DEI and what we haven't covered before, and then find the best speakers for that
  • Organise workshops for DEI experts to come to discuss with more open source leaders.
  1. Develop reference guides and resources.
  • Highlight DEI practices that can be referenced as industry benchmarks.
    • Possibly provide ongoing support for those seeking to adopt
    • Offer DEI office hours for people in the field to come and chat about their efforts/needs.
    • See if opensource.guides need to be updated.
  • Collaborating with organizations championing DEI to create and curate field-tested resources.
  • Have a landscape of existing resources for reference.
  1. Lead discussion around sustaining the DEI in open-source
  • Run a focus group/document building break out that identifies what are the vectors in the open source ecosystem where lack of DEI leads to systemic risks
  • Understand how we can focus on projects or foundations; that is, already well-organized groups who have their governance but need a guide to help them to improve DEI efforts.
    • Discussing with folks actively working to implement DEI initiatives
    • Will the focus be on contributors, users, or both?
  • Offer DEI office hours for people in the field to come and chat about their efforts/needs and connect them with experts leading initiatives.
  1. Leading Research and Studies:
  • Lead research efforts that help us understand how DEI affects contributors, users, or maintainers.
  • Apply for funding opportunities to initiate DEI programs and efforts.
    • (Once the goal and work plan are established, research what funding opportunities are available).

  • What does DEI mean to you? How do you approach DEI within your Community? Do you focus only on users, contributors, or both?
  • How can we support DEI efforts in FOSS communities?
  • How can we sustain the DEI within the open source?
